How do we teach God’s love and grace to our community in an open, accepting, loving, and helpful way? How do we
show our neighbors how merciful and kind Jesus is?
In changing times we are called as a changing church to speak to the different experiences, needs, and challenges of
the people in the community around us. In these times of uncertainty and stress I believe the church at its best can offer
a wonderful reminder of God’s love and grace.

About our pastor:
Katherine Marshall (Hillesland) graduated from California Lutheran University, Thousand Oaks, with honors in
Religion in 1996. At CLU, she served as departmental assistant and worked closely with both professors and students.
She pursued graduate studies at Union Theological Seminary (New York) and Fuller (Pasadena), graduating from
Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in 2005. Her professional preparation included a year of internship at
Redeemer Lutheran Church in Portland, a small urban church committed to community-based organizing. Her first call
was to Christ Lutheran in Tacoma, where she was ordained in 2005.
The daughter, granddaughter, great-granddaughter and great-great granddaughter of Lutheran pastors, Pastor Kate is
passionate about ministry, especially about the building up of a broadly inclusive, community-based church. She grew
up in Puerto Rico, speaking Spanish and sharing her father’s work with Latino Lutherans. She has lived in New York,
San Juan, Chicago, Minnesota and San Diego, appreciating the church in all its variety.
Pastor Kate is married to the Rev. Bernt Hillesland, Pastor at St. Luke, Woodland Hills. They have five children,
Joseph and Samuel (twins), Isaac, Madeleine, and Paul.
